Anders Breivik, confessed perpetrator of the shooting, in 2009.

Anders Breivik, 32, confessed to the bombing in Oslo, Norway, and the shooting in Utøya, Norway. He is a right-wing extremist who holds Islamophobic and xenophobic worldviews. His actions were an attempt to make a statement, which he defined was jus necessitatis (out of necessity). The influx of Muslims to Europe frustrated Breivik, which led to the attack.

Impact of Religion

Anders Breivik, described by the police as a Christian fundamentalist, performed the attacks out of opposition to Muslims living in Europe. He does not directly credit his actions to his Christian beliefs, but the reasons for his actions were certainly a result of his lack of tolerance of those whose beliefs differ from his.
